This weekend FBCC had the privilege of hosting “Renew 2.0” a marriage enhancement conference led by Michael and Amy Smalley. There was a great deal of laughter and information shared that many have said has already been beneficial to their relationships. However, one of the “pieces of information” that most will not forget concerning this weekend was when my friend, Mike Smalley, decided to share with the whole congregation that while at Baylor University we met as “male cheerleaders.”
He challenged both of our services to find a picture of me “in those days” as a way of incriminating me concerning my past. So . . . to save you all a little bit of precious time, here it is:

Allow me to answer a few questions regarding the picture at hand.
1. How did you become a “male cheerleader?” No, it was never my plan to be a “male cheerleader.” I tried out on account that it was a fraternity pledge assignment given to me. The short story: try out and get initiated; do not and you will not. I tried out, and lo and behold, I made it – God’s sense of humor!
2. Why is my uniform “different” than the others? Mike referred to me in the services as the “Mic-Man.” Actually, my job on the field, in addition to what you see in the picture, was to lead via a wireless microphone all the “cheers” for Baylor University. Yes, they gave me carte blanche, without a seven second delay, access to communicate with over 50,000 fans (Baylor was actually good then) over a Public Address system – frightening!
3. Why is my leg bandaged? The irony concerning my experience as a “male cheerleader” was the intense rigor, physical demands, and injury rate of the sport – yes, in college it is a Division 1 sport. Throughout my life I have had the privilege to participate in the following sports: baseball, basketball (passing guard due to height), football, golf, track and field, and tennis. Additionally, I have played numerous intramural and recreational leagues. However, I received more injuries as a “male cheerleader” than all of the other sporting endeavors combined. Though it has its “perception,” for those involved, it is very painful.
4. Whose feet are at the top of the picture? Yes, those shoes belong to Mrs. Amy Smalley. After this weekend, aren’t you glad I did not drop her!
Let’s see a picture of Mike too! Also on your list of sports encounters, I see you saved the best ’til last, tennis. That’s what I hope to get to enjoy again in Heaven, can’t seem to find any top priority spots for it these days. This is my first try at blogging. Thanks, You’ve taught me something new again.
Sunday’s message was one of the few i’ve missed but my above comment about tennis in Heaven was in jest. Without hearing the message yet my real thoughts are that i won’t even care about tennis and will have so much more rewarding opportunities of serving Our Lord in whatever ways He plans.
I plan on listening soon to the lies about Heaven.
Thanks Jeff for delivering God’s Word and Truth without compromise or dilution. As this month is Pastor appreciation month, please know that i’m so thankful for You and Traci and to God for bringing your family here to First Bapt Conyers. Watching expectedly for His continuing handiwork. Praising Him for all of the new believers.
